Privacy Policy
Artemis Lens is an unofficial companion app for NASA's Artemis II mission. This policy explains what data the app handles and how your privacy is protected. In short: we do not collect, store, or transmit any personal data.
What the app does
Artemis Lens displays live mission data from NASA's public Jet Propulsion Laboratory Horizons API and helps you visualize, understand, and locate the Orion spacecraft. All features run locally on your device.
Information the app accesses
The app requests access to certain device features only when needed for a specific feature. None of this data is transmitted off your device.
- Location. Used only to compute where the Orion spacecraft is in the sky relative to your current position. Your location never leaves your device and is never stored. If you deny this permission, the app falls back to Kennedy Space Center as a default.
- Camera. Used only by the Sky Finder AR feature as a background for the trajectory overlay. No images are captured, saved, or transmitted.
- Motion sensors (compass, accelerometer). Used only to determine which direction your phone is pointing so the app can guide you toward Orion. No motion data leaves your device.
- Notifications. Used only for optional local reminders about upcoming mission milestones. All notifications are scheduled and delivered entirely on your device. Nothing is sent to a remote server.
Data we do not collect
- No personal information
- No account or login required
- No analytics or tracking
- No advertising identifiers
- No crash reports sent to third parties
- No cookies, no device fingerprinting
- No payment information
Third-party services
The app makes anonymous network requests to the following public NASA and JPL services to fetch mission trajectory data and images:
- JPL Horizons API (ssd.jpl.nasa.gov) - spacecraft and Moon position data
- NASA Images API (images.nasa.gov) - public Artemis II mission photos
These requests contain only the query parameters needed to fetch the data (such as a time range). They do not include any personal information, device identifier, or account. NASA and JPL have their own privacy policies which apply when you use their services.
Children's privacy
Artemis Lens does not collect any personal information from anyone, including children. The app includes a Kid Mode with family-friendly explanations and is suitable for educational use in classrooms and at home.
Data security
Because the app does not collect or transmit personal data, there is no personal data for us to protect against unauthorized access. Your preferences, journal entries, and achievements are stored locally on your device and are removed when you uninstall the app.
Your rights
Since we do not collect any personal data, there is no data for us to access, correct, or delete on your behalf. You can uninstall the app at any time to remove all locally stored data.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Continued use of the app after a change means you accept the updated policy.
